By March 1953 the Sun Records Label was established, with its now famous logo designed by Phillips former schoolfriend John Gale Parker.
In 1954 a young man walked into the studio to record a couple of songs as a gift for his mother,Phillips heard the youngster and asked him to return to record some tracks with the studio band which included up and coming guitarist Scotty Moore. The young man was of course Elvis Presley.
Elvis initialy recorded two tracks Mystery Train and Thats Alright Mama, although these songs where originally pure blues they where played and recorded in a style that was a sort of fusion between blues and country which they called Rockabilly,to the rest of the world Rock n Roll was born.
In 1955 Presleys contract was sold to RCA For 35000 dollars due to Sun getting into financial difficulties.Phillips went on to record such luminnaries as Roy Orbison,Carl Perkins,Johnny Cash and Jerry lee Lewis and released some amazing songs, for example Blue Suede Shoes,Whole Lotta Shakin Goin On and I Walk The Line, making Sun Records the most important label in Rock n Roll.
The Sun label ceased to operate in 1968 however today ,the original recordings can change hands for large amounts of money, and Sun have left a legacy of recorded material that is as important as any in the history of modern popular music. If you are interested to hear some of these Sun artists pop to my site www.frostysguitars.com and look in the CDs section.
