The right framing selections can help transform an inexpensive print, or even a poster into something that looks like an expensive work of art. You should avoid mat colors that match your art instead of enhancing it. If what you want is for it to pick up a color from the image then a double or triple mat will do. Leave the colors to the bottom mats and stick with neutral shades for the top. Using double and triple mats offer a sense of dimension when framing.

The size of the piece as well as the width of the frame is important when determining the mat width. Refrain from using one width when it comes to your mat and frame. This results in the formation of a striped pattern that detracts from the image. One half inch is how long the bottom mat of a double mat should at least extend to. What you should do with mats is see to it that all sides have the same width.

You may have some floating prints and images that have deckled edges. Attached to the front of your mat board is a floating print. There is a border around the image thanks to the mat board. It is alright for a print with uneven deckled edges not to be perfectly centered on the mat. Cutting the mats to place over the edges of a print is a good option especially when there is nothing distinctive about the edges.

There are times when framing photographs becomes a challenge. Should you have formal photographs including wedding photos and portraits you should go for ornate wood frames in silver, gold and a variety of natural finishes but simple wood or metal frames in black or silver or with light natural wood frames work well for art photographs especially those in black and white. Competing with black and white photographs are gold finished or cherry wood frames.

Most of the time ornate frames work well with antique photographs. Working best for old black and white photos are silver frames. For sepia prints it is a good idea to go for antiqued gold finished frames and wooden ones in cherry, mahogany, and ebony walnut. From fabric liners to ornate mouldings, these enhance traditional paintings including portraits and landscapes. When it comes to contemporary paintings, do not use liners and go for simple frames.

There is more to framing than just being used for paintings, photographs, prints, and posters. Should you have christening dresses, political buttons, theater tickets, fabrics, and old letters and postcards then you can frame them and then display them in your home or in your office. In gallery style framing, the look is minimalist. Other than matte black wooden frames ones with natural finishes are also used here.

Other than having no ornamentation these frames only have straight edges. With 8 ply mats in various shades of white the mats used in gallery style framing are thick. Mats that are 5 inches wide can be placed on a small image that measures about 3 by 5 inches. Other than drawing the viewer's eye into the image the heavy mats make it seem that the piece is important.

Ornate wood frames remain popular because they work well with antique furnishings and reproductions. Opulence in the 1980s mood is reflected by the high sheen silver and gold frames while represented by the antiqued silver and gold frames is the modest spirit of the 1990s. Variations exist with industrial metal frames and the metal frames from a decade ago. They feature brushed finishes with cross hatching, and are wider and have cleaner lines than their ancestors. Considering framing options, these and earlier metal frames are all economical choices.

Responsible for bringing back art photography into the scene are famous photographers but responsible for making restoring and framing your family's own antique photographs are restoration services. Less expensive than many original artworks are antique posters even if they are rather expensive to frame and the value of the latter continues to increase with time. Other than loft dwellers these are beneficial to those with wall space to spare.
