When asked the question how did Chrylser do in 2009? One must be very pragmatic in their answer. The company joined forces with Fiat, which did not bear any immediate results other than a stay of execution. Another way to answer the question of how did Chrylser do in 2000?' would be to point at their shrinking portfolio. Either of these methods may be fair game for determining the performance of the Pentastar during the calendar year of 2009.
Of course, automotive investments are not short term investments, so the deal with Fiat could be viewed as more than a stay of execution. It could be viewed as a critical revitalization of a company that was essentially directionless, even when partnered with Diamler. Fiat's influence has yet to be felt in any meaningful way, but the fact that Chrysler was bailed out did seem to reassure consumers as sales in the last quarter were better than expected according to the New York Times and Wall Street analysts. On the flip side, not many were expecting much from Chrysler in 2009.
One thing that Chrysler did do in 2009 was trim their offerings. The Chrysler Aspen and its twin, the Dodge Duragno, both disappeared from the lineup along with plans for several electric vehicles including a Town and Country. Strangely, the Chrylser PT Cruiser, which was due to be discontinued was given an extra breath of life and was produced throughout 2009 despite the company previously claiming that production of the nearly decade old car would be terminated in 2008. Chrysler did see some positive publicity for its upcoming 300 series makeover, but that actually hurt existing sales of 300 series cars during the calendar year of 2009.
